BG Carter called the meeting to order at 1515 hours.
AGENDA ITEM # 1: APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF 23 APRIL 2002
The minutes were unanimously approved as written.
AGENDA ITEM # 2: CADET ACADEMIC RECOGNITION
BG Carter announced that he had intended to recognize Cadet Ryan Parker as the First Honor Graduate at the meeting, but Cadet Parker was not able to attend.
AGENDA ITEM # 3: CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION COMMITTEE REPORT
BG Carter recognized MAJ Harry Davakos to present the report from the Curriculum and Instruction Committee
MAJ Davakos summarized the changes being recommended by the committee:
Modern Languages
Based on the recommendation of the Curriculum Committee, the modern language curricular changes were approved unanimously.
Electrical Engineering
Based on the recommendation of the Curriculum Committee, the curricular changes for electrical engineering were approved unanimously.

Based on the recommendation of the Curriculum Committee, the curricular changes for political science and criminal justice were approved unanimously.
Education
Eliminate the Education, History degree on the grounds that the Education, Social Studies degree better prepares students to obtain teaching jobs upon graduation.
Based on the recommendation of the Curriculum Committee, the elimination of the history concentration for education majors was approved unanimously.
Health, Exercise and Sport Science

Based on the recommendation of the Curriculum Committee, the curricular changes for the Department of Health, Exercise and Sport Science were approved unanimously.
AGENDA ITEM # 4: APPROVAL OF GRADUATION CANDIDATES
COL Metts moved, COL Askins seconded, and the Board unanimously approved the conferring of degrees on all those undergraduate students who are confirmed by the Registrar’s Office as having met the requirements for their degrees.
AGENDA ITEM # 5: ISSUES REGARDING ETHICS
BG Carter asked that department heads send him their reactions to the President’s remarks at the faculty meeting last week about cadet ethics.
COL Cleaver expressed concern about the issue of honor violations among students working collaboratively on laboratory assignments. He asked if guidelines might be developed that could be used campus wide. BG Carter said he would be working with BG Barrett, the Advisor to the Honor Committee, on this issue, among others.
AGENDA ITEM # 6: BUDGET
BG Carter announced that the budget situation looks worse rather than better.
The Legislature did not annualize last year’s salary increase which translates into another reduction since the college will have to identify funds to cover the ongoing costs.
AGENDA ITEM # 7: MISCELLANEOUS
BG Carter recognized the individuals who will be leaving Academic Board.
Al Finch is stepping down as head of the Department of Psychology and will be on sabbatical next year. Steve Silver has completed his term as Chair of Faculty Council and will be succeeded next year by George Williams in the Education Department. And Suzanne Ozment will be leaving The Citadel to take a position at USC-Aiken.
