2008 CAA Award Guidelines
1. Alumnus of the Year
(Previous Recipients)
The Alumnus of the Year Award recognizes an outstanding achievement, act of humanity, or service to, the Alumni Association, The Citadel, or the nation, city, state, or an organization.
The action(s) or achievement(s) may be: career oriented, special recognition in their field, work on special significant projects, or other significant personal achievement. The act(s) of service or humanity must be significant, extraordinary and beyond those normally expected from an individual with similar duties. The award may be based on a single achievement/act or a combination of many.
This award is intended to recognize current achievements or acts. Current for the purposes of this award is within the immediate and prior year. This time frame may be expanded if warranted. Most importantly, this action or achievement must bring honor and credit to the individual(s) awarded and The Citadel.
The recipient must be an Alumnus of the Corps of Cadets, Active Duty, Veteran or CGPS and a member in good standing of the CAA at the time they are nominated for the award. This award is subordinate to the Distinguished Life Member award, but higher than the Young Alumnus of the Year.
2. Honorary Life Member
(Previous Recipients)
The CAA is allowed, under its Bylaws, to award up to ten Honorary Life Memberships to individuals at any one time. Honorary Life Members are non-alumni not otherwise eligible for membership who have rendered unusual and conspicuous service to The Citadel. At this time we have four living recipients.
Upon motion by any Member or Associate Member to the Executive Committee, or upon its own motion, the Executive Committee may nominate a person to the Board for recognition as an Honorary Member together with the written reasons for such nomination. The board must approve the nomination by two-thirds (2/3) vote of its Members.
3. Distinguished Life Member
(Previous Recipients)
The CAA is allowed, under its Bylaws, to award Distinguished Life Memberships to individuals. Distinguished Life Members are alumni selected for rendering unusual and conspicuous service to The Citadel or to The Citadel Alumni Association.
Upon recommendation of the Executive Committee and upon a vote of two-thirds (2/3) of the Board, a Member who has rendered unusual and conspicuous service to The Citadel or to the Association will be designated as a Distinguished Life Member, with such persons having the privileges of the floor and the ballot during their lifetime.
4. Young Alumnus of the Year
(Previous Recipients)
The “Young Alumnus of the Year” award will be used to recognize an outstanding achievement, act of humanity, or service to the Nation, City, State or an organization. The action(s) or achievement(s) may be career oriented for special recognition in their field of work or a significant personal achievement within their field. The act(s) of service or humanity must be significant, extraordinary and beyond those normally expected from and individual with similar duties. The award may be based on a single achievement/act or a combination of many. This award is intended to recognize current achievements or acts rather than cumulative performance over many years. Current for the purposes of this award is within the immediate or prior year. Most importantly, this action or achievement must bring honor and credit to the individual(s) awarded and The Citadel.
Any Alumnus of the Corps of Cadets, Active Duty, or CGPS who is within 20 years of their graduation or age 45, whichever comes first, is eligible to receive this award. Furthermore, the candidate must be a member in good standing of the CAA at the time they are nominated for the award. No individual may receive the award more than once. Furthermore, this award should stand alone and may not be combined with the Alumnus of the Year award.
Upon receipt of the award, the recipient will receive a plaque recognizing their achievement and a small gift to be determined annually by the Executive Committee. They will also be recognized in the Alumni News and CYA newsletter. If possible, this person should be recognized at the Homecoming Parade along with all other CAA award winners.
Candidates can be nominated by any member of the CAA, a classmate or any member of the staff or faculty of The Citadel. The award will be given at the CAA Annual Meeting and nominations must be received by September 1st of that year.
The Awards committee will review all nominees and, at their sole discretion, narrow the list to 3 candidates. Those finalists will then be ranked and brought to the Executive committee for further consideration and debate before the ultimate winner is determined. The two runners up should receive a formal letter of recognition from the Executive Director and President of the CAA. These two runners up should also be recognized in the Alumni News and CYA newsletter.
