LIFE AS A NEW LIEUTENANT
Lieutenants make leadership and management decisions
daily. You may be tasked to develop a Company Training
Plan, Physical Fitness Program, or Unit Deployment Plan.
Whatever mission the Army is tasked to do, it develops
or utilizes existing plans to assist in the successful
completion of the assigned mission.
You will use the 8 Troop
Leading Procedures, Operations Order, and After Action
Review to guide and assist you in the accomplishment
of the mission. Those leadership and management tools
will be learned in Army ROTC years in advance of your
commissioning as a lieutenant.
You may have over 100 soldiers
under your command as a lieutenant. Can you think of
any civilian job that may afford the same opportunity
at such a young age? That is a tremendous asset derived
by commissioning as a lieutenant in the United States
Army!
As an officer you will
be afforded the opportunity to further your military
and civilian education. As you progress in rank throughout
your career, you will be sent to various military schools
such as your basic branch advanced course, Combined
Arms Service and Staff School (CAS3), Command and General
Staff Course (CGSC), and others. You may be selected
for Advanced Civil Schooling (ACS) where you will pursue
a masters degree in preparation for future assignments.
You may be selected to work in private industry which
is a great way to broaden your scope of appreciation
of the Department of Defense. In summary, your opportunities
are endless as an officer in the United States Army!
