Hold Your Special Event at the Summerall Chapel
Welcome to Summerall Chapel, a beautiful and historic venue for weddings and special events, located at The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina.

- Spacious Capacity: Accommodates up to 1,200 guests, with additional seating in side chapels.
- Traditional Features: Experience a 197-foot aisle, original pews, candles, and classic architecture for an elegant wedding.
Amenities
When you book Summerall Chapel, the following items are available to enhance your special event:
- Aisle Candles: 18 aisle candles (9 on each side), available upon request.
- Included Décor: A large bouquet of white flowers and a pair of seven-candle candelabra.
- Additional Equipment: Two pulpits with microphones, a wireless lapel mic, a padded kneeler, a baby grand piano and tables for programs or guest books.
- Bridal Room: Access to the Bridal Room in Mark Clark Hall two hours prior to the wedding.
- Accessibility: Handicapped entrance available on the right side of the Chapel.
- Approved Decorations: Hooks on the doors for wreaths, ribbon-tied pew markers, and greenery on aisle candles.
- Sexton Services: A sexton (often a Citadel cadet) is assigned to assist with ceremony logistics, lighting, and cleanup. They also serve as event coordinators in the absence of a wedding planner.
Important Guidelines
The following guidelines should be considered prior to booking the Summerall Chapel for your wedding. Complete regulations and guidelines as dictated by State law and school policy are included in the reservation agreement.
- The Citadel is an alcohol and tobacco-free campus.
- Animals are prohibited in the Chapel unless it is a service animal.
- Food and drink, with the exception of water, are not permitted in the Chapel.
- Drones are not permitted on campus.
- Fees for additional clean-up and repairs for damage to the Chapel caused by renters, vendors, or guests will be assessed.
- We ask that you refrain from throwing or dropping anything (i.e. flower petals, rice, birdseed, bubbles, etc.) inside or outside of the Chapel.
- Only chapel-approved organists may play the organ at the Summerall Chapel.
- Aisle decorations must be affixed with ribbon or plastic clips (no glass containers or water are allowed).
Scheduling Your Wedding or Special Event

- Available Times: Weddings are scheduled on Saturdays at 12 PM, 3 PM, and 6 PM, as well as Sunday afternoons. Fridays may be available during the summer by exception. Please note that weddings are not scheduled on select weekends, including Parents’ Weekend, Homecoming, and Graduation.
- Rehearsal Information: Rehearsals are available on Friday afternoons at 4 PM, 5 PM, and 6 PM. Wedding reservations include three hours, with a one-hour rehearsal scheduled the day before the ceremony.
- Catholic Weddings: If you are planning a Catholic wedding, please contact Sara Cavallon at Sacred Heart Church (shcweddings@charlestondiocese.org) prior to confirming your date and time. She manages the canonical paperwork for Catholic weddings, and there may be additional fees and requirements to discuss before signing your contract with Summerall Chapel.
- Fees: Please note that fees may vary based on your affiliation with The Citadel.
Event Insurance Requirements
Users of The Citadel’s facilities for events not sponsored by The Citadel (i.e. meetings, parties, weddings, etc.) must be insured for liability. The insurance must include the following:
- $3 Million per incident and $5 Million aggregate
- The Citadel and State of South Carolina as additional insurers
- Alcohol liability, if alcohol is served at the event
For corporate/company events please speak to your company’s insurance agent or representative.
For private parties please explore different insurance companies that meet our requirements. But to help you get started, feel free to obtain a quote from TULIP, Eventsured, or Wedsure. These special event insurance policies have a $1 Million limit per incident. If you select $5 Million as the “Excess Coverage” or “Excess Liability,” The Citadel deems this amount as acceptable coverage. Your certificate of insurance should be presented to Nicole DeNeane, Wedding Manager, no less than 60 days prior to your wedding.
