Research Abstract - PDF (10kb)

Seven chemistry majors are working on their senior research projects with their faculty advisor. Five senior students have presented their senior research in local and national forums. The students and faculty have devoted a significant amount of time working on their research projects. Financial support for the research and the travel to present at these meetings has been provided by the Citadel Development Foundation, Schiller Science Initiative, Provost’s Office and Chemistry Department.

Ms. Lisa Bydairk and her research advisor, Dr. Kevin Crawford presented their work on rapid analytical methods for determining toxins associated with Trichodesnium thiebautii at Pittcon in Chicago in February 2007.

Three students presented their research at the American Chemical Society National Conference in Chicago in March 2007. Mr. Tzu Hung Chu and his research advisor, Dr. Holly Bevsek presented their work on the reaction of nitrogen dioxide with multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Mr. Cody Sandquist and his research advisor, Dr. Michael Dorko presented their work on the storage and generation of hydrogen gas from methane absorbed on platinum/magnesium surfaces. Mr. Richard Terrio and his research advisor, Dr. Michael Dorko presented their theoretical investigation of the adsorption of sarin on a-alumina.

Tzu-Hung Chu
Cody Sandquist
Richard Terrio
Each presented his research at the American Chemical Society National Conference.

Five students from the Chemistry Department participated in the Citadel Undergraduate Research Conference in March 2007. This conference was organized by Dr. Kevin Crawford. Ms. Bydairk, Mr. Chu, Mr. Sandquist, Mr. Shaw and Mr Terrio all presented their senior research. Mr. Aaron Shaw and his research advisor Dr. Suzanne Mabrouk presented their work on the quantitative analysis of calcium, iron and potassium in multivitamins. All of the projects are as mentioned above. Ms. Lisa Bydairk was awarded third place in the competition. The course of study for students majoring in chemistry is designed to prepare them to enroll as graduate students in full standing at leading universities; to provide the foundation for pursuing careers in medicine, dentistry, and other professions; and to fill positions as chemists in industry laboratories. These curricula embody training in the five fundamental subdivisions of the science: biochemistry, inorganic, organic, analytical, and physical chemistry.

Picture of Byrd Hall

The Department of Chemistry occupies Byrd Hall, which was completed in 1968. Within its 52,000 square feet, this facility houses a lecture theater; laboratories, and conveniently located stockroom, preparation rooms, and balance rooms. Students majoring in chemistry may choose between the B.A. curriculum, B.S. curriculum and the B.S.-Biochemistry Specialty curriculum. The decision concerning which curriculum to take is dependent on the students goals after graduation. Additonally, students in other majors may elect to Minor in Chemistry or Minor in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology.
