New MBA Program Information

(Note: If you need to check OLD program requirements, the courses, prerequisites, etc., appear in the CGPS Catalog.)

The Citadel has refocused and improved its MBA Program. Some changes include elimination of all 1.5 hour courses and the addition of several new courses. Total program hours remain at 48, however the mix of required and elective hours has changed. The number of elective courses has been revised from four (12 hours) to two (6 hours). Substantial additional emphasis has been given to leadership within the curriculum. Additional flexibility for students is gained by reducing the number of prerequisites. We are excited about the program changes; several were influenced by expressed needs and preferences of our students, and we believe these changes will be a benefit to students. We also instituted changes based on some excellent guidance from The Citadel School of Business Administration Advisory Board.

All applicants admitted to the MBA Program after 30 January 2007, as well as any students who begin their first class after that date, will be on the new program. Details are on this web site and will be published in the upcoming edition of the CGPS Catalog. Given below are answers to some questions you may have about this change. Please let us know of any other questions or concerns that you may have.

Questions About the New MBA Program

What are the major changes to the MBA program?

Significant changes include elimination of all 1.5 hour courses and the addition of several new courses. You will notice that the new courses are numbered using the 700 series, whereas the old courses used the 600 series.

Why did you make these changes?

We are excited about the program changes; several were influenced by expressed needs and preferences of our students, and we believe these changes will be a benefit to students. We also instituted changes based on some excellent guidance from The Citadel School of Business Administration Advisory Board.

How do these changes affect students who entered the program prior to 30 January 2007?

The transition to the new program should be smooth and seamless. All of the new program electives and many of the required courses will be equivalent to the old courses. A detailed listing is given later. We will continue offering the old courses until all current students have had a reasonable opportunity to take those they need.

Does the number of my allowed electives change?

All students in the "old" program retain their 12 hours of elective credit. Students admitted to the program after 30 January 2007, as well as any students who begin their first class after that date, will be on the new program, which permits 6 hours of elective credit.

Do the new prerequisite and course exemption requirements apply to those in the old program?

Yes, if they will help you. We have made a concerted effort to simplify and streamline these requirements.

If I am in the old program do I need to be concerned about brand new courses?

No, students who started classes prior to 30 January 2007 need not be concerned with these new courses. There are four of these brand NEW Required Courses (they do not have a corresponding old number):

New Number

Name of Course

BADM 701

Foundations of Accounting

BADM 704

Foundations of Economics

BADM 707

Foundations of Marketing and International Business

BADM 725

Foundations of Finance

BADM 731

Foundations of Management and Operations

Which old courses have been eliminated, and what do I need to do about that?

Four OLD Required Courses have been eliminated. Unless you are in the new program, you should take these right away:

Old Number

Name of Course

BADM 603

Managerial Accounting for Decision Making

BADM 605

Fundamentals of Finance

BADM 607

Organizational Theory

BADM 609

Foundations of Marketing

What should I do if I started before 30 January but am still in my first year of the program?

You need to give top priority to completing the initial sequence of required courses. Our current plan is to "teach out" the earlier courses of the program sequence first, meaning that the "early" courses will be offered only until all students in the "old" program have completed them. Examples of "early" courses would be all four of the 1.5 hour courses that are being eliminated, and any prerequisites for them (BADM 601) shown below:

Old Number

Old Name

Credit Hours

BADM 601

Financial Accounting for Decision Making

3.0

BADM 603

Managerial Accounting for Decision Making

1.5

BADM 605

Fundamentals of Finance

1.5

BADM 607

Organizational Theory

1.5

BADM 609

Foundations of Marketing

1.5

We anticipate offering the above listed courses for two terms, Summer 2007 and Fall 2007, which should provide ample opportunity for all students to complete them. If you have not already completed these six courses, then take them at your very first opportunity since they will be phased out soon.

If I am in the old program what other course changes do I need to be aware of?

Several old Courses have been substantially revised but their new content matches the old course sufficiently that we will apply credit from the new course to the corresponding old one. This means that you can take the new courses listed below and receive credit for the old courses :

Old Number

Old Name

New Number

BADM 604

Statistics and Quantitative Methods for Decision Making

BADM 710

BADM 713

BADM 618

BADM 722

BADM 614

If I am in the old program what courses do I NOT need to be concerned about?

Actually most of the courses have not changed substantially, so you need not be concerned about them or how they affect you. These courses fall into two groups - required courses and elective courses.

Required Courses that are equivalent:

There are five required courses in which the content has not substantially changed (but they do have new numbers and/or names). These courses are equivalent. For example, if you have not yet taken 616, you will simply sign up for 737. When you complete 737, the Registrar will automatically change your record to show completion of 616:
