ENGL 205: Informative Speaking
Course Description In accordance withthe catalog description, this course will expose you to "general principles of speech composition and speech presentation" and give you "practice in expository speaking."
Prerequisites To take this course, you must have successrully completed ENGL 101.
Textbook The Art of Public Speaking, 7th edition, Stephen Lucas (McGraw-Hill, 2001).
Course Goals Upon completion of this course, you should be able to write and deliver an informative speech, and you should be able to evaluate both the text and the delivery of an informative speech.
Course Requirements You will read most of the textbook and take two quizzes and two exams on textbook and lecture material. You will write and deliver three informatiove speeches of 5-8 minutes each; for each speech, you will turn in a preliminary text for feedback before the speech and write an evaluation after the speech.
Grades Point values for each assignment are as follows:

You must earn at least 225 points for a final grade of "A"; 200 for a "B"; 175 for a "C." If you take the course pass/fail, you must earn at least 175 points for a "pass."
Attendance According to school policy, you must attend at least 80% of the class meeting to pass the course. For your grade, I will give you half a point each time you show up to class on time, up to a maximum of 20 points. If you arrive after I call roll, you don't get the half point.
Plagiarism You are responsible for reading and understanding the school policy on plagiarism. Be sure to cite all your sources, both orally and in the written text of your speeches.
Late or Missed Work It is your responsibility to know when to give your speeches and to get any audio-visual equipment or other props. If you fail to speak at your assigned time, you will receive a grade of zero for your speech. (Exceptions: emergency leave and hospitalization.) Written work is due at the beginning of the period on the due date; late work will receive a significant loss of points.
Tentative Schedule for Spring 2002
01-16 Introductory lecture. Begin generating speech topics.
01-18 Read Appendix A, "Giving Your First Speech." Create 2- to 3-minute speech to introduce yourself to the class.
01-23 Introductory speeches. Discuss Chapters 1-3. (Last day of drop/add.)
01-25 Introductory speeches. Discuss Chapter 4 (topic selection). Discuss speech topics in small groups.
01-28 Quiz on Chapters 4-7. Discuss Chapters 5-6 (audience analysis; data collection).
01-30 Discuss Chapter 7 (using evidence).
02-01 Discuss Chapters 8-9 (organization; intro & conclusion).
02-04 Quiz on Chapters 8-12. Discuss Chapter 11. Turn in text for Speech #1.
02-06 Discuss Chapter 12.

02-11 Deliver intro to Speech #1.
