Members present: David Allen (arrived late), John Brown, Hughes
Hoyle, Janette Moody, John Murden, Tom
Thompson, Rod Welch
1. Tom called the meeting to order and read the list of this year’s
members, noting that the committee needs one
more member from Cluster A. Nobody knew whether we should approach
the Committee on Committees or simply
recruit someone. Tom will look into the matter.
2. Rod reported on ITS activities for the summer, as well as other news of interest:
a. Labs
•All Windows
lab computers have been upgraded to 16 MB of RAM; Windows 95 (W95) is currently
being installed
on all hard drives. Two windows will open automatically when computers
are turned on:
one for MicroSoft
Office Pro and one for CitNet. Infrequently used applications have been
removed
from hard drives
and now reside on the Novell server.
•Capers 313, a new lab, has 18 Pentium PCs.
•LeTellier 203 computers have been upgraded.
•Bond 252 has Pentium PCs with W95.
•Bond 258 has 486s with W95.
•Color printers
have been removed from Bond 251; one is in the User Support Office and
the other is in
the multimedia
lab.
•The phone number for ALL help is 953-HELP.
b. Barracks
•Every barracks room has an ethernet connection for each occupant.
•Cadets now pay
a computer fee of $25/semester; non-cadets pay $15/semester. The fees will
fund two
positions: a
cadet consultant coordinator and a manager for all Bond Hall labs.
c. Personnel
•Alan Greenberg
is the new User Support Manager. He is assisted by Debbie Fisher (in charge
of
training and
documentation) and Gene Creson (in charge of troubleshooting for faculty/staff
office
computers).
•The ITS "chain
of command" is relatively flat. Top level: Rod Welch (director). Next level:
Kasey
Briggs (multimedia),
Don Carlton (VAX and Unix), Alan Greenberg (User Support), and George Russ
(Networks).
Alan currently has two full-time assistants (Debbie and Gene); everyone
else is part-time
or temporary.
d. CITNews
•Rod plans to
publish a newsletter in September, but nothing has been done on it so far.
The questions
submitted by
Tom for publication could be answered in an email message or on the CSC
listserv (see
below).
e. New Ethernet Connection
•In mid-September,
our current 56KB ethernet connection (provided by NASA, but insufficient
for
current traffic)
will be replaced by a T1 line (purchased by the school for about $14,000/yr).
Internet
service will
be disrupted while the new line is being installed. (ITS has no plans to
provide PPP or other
connections
to allow dial-up access to graphics capabilities; off-campus users must
find their own
providers.)
f. Other
•ITS has no plans to connect Deas Hall to CitNet, as the cost ($30,000) is prohibitive.
•BGEN Poole has approved funds to upgrade all faculty 486 and Pentium PCs to W95.
•BGEN Poole,
to encourage faculty to use computer technology in the classroom, will
be accepting
proposals to
upgrade office computers for faculty who do so.
•Computer training
for freshmen has increased: 2 2-hr sessions during Academic Orientation,
plus a
required Saturday
session, plus optional afternoon classes.
•ITS is working on a master calendar and a community bulletin board.
3. Tom reported that a listserv for campus computer users is ready for
use. A message on how to subscribe should
go out by email next week.
Meeting adjourned at 3:45.
