Rod Welch
Visitor present: Debbie Fisher
1. Rod Welch gave his year-end report:
-Labs work better and are more stable than last year, but lighting
and AC are still major problems.
-Computer competency testing has been a time-consuming effort this
year;
however, all but 11 first-year cadets have passed the
competency exam to date.
-The campus network is getting better, with PPLT and Deas Hall hooked
up, and fiber to all barracks.
-Our web site looks better, and is targeted to high school seniors
and their parents.
-New web applications (e.g., OS&D; vehicle requests) are in development
or in use
-Office 97 will be installed in all labs this summer
-Debbie Fisher will set up a training schedule for Office 97
-Students will have greater access to personal info via our web site
-Current concerns: Our web connection is at its saturation point;
ITS is working on web-based Hotline;
physical problems in labs (e.g., AC problems) are difficult
to correct.
2. Debbie reported on additional lab improvements, including a portable white board in Capers 215 and a portable lectern to fit over monitors in Bond labs.
3. Rather than work on refining proposal form for requesting new computers, we decided to let next year's committee work on the proposal form.
4. We discussed issues raised by other faculty members:
-The committee will recommend to MGEN Poole that all barracks rooms
be hooked up to the net as quickly as possible.
-Rod reported that The Citadel has no plan for upgrading lab, faculty,
or staff PCs as they age.
-The committee will ask Development for money for staff computers (esp.
for dept. secretaries).
5. There being no further business, we adjourned before noon.
