Computer Services Committee
Minutes of 10-29-98 Meeting

Members present: Professors Chen, Hoyle, Moody, Murphy, and Thompson; Rod Welch

Chair: The committee asked Tom Thompson to serve another year as chair.

New computer proposals: Proposals are due to COL Metts NLT November 2. Tom will ask him for the packets, which will then be available for pick-up in the English Department office.  Committee members will rank each proposal, then return their scores to Tom NLT November 12. Tom will tally and distribute the scores, then the committee will meet on Tuesday, November 17 to make final recommendations.

Reports: The committee will meet on December 3 to receive mid-year reports from Rod Welch, Debbie Fisher, and Leslie Ogden on the state of affairs at ITS.

Labs: Rod will schedule a meeting of faculty who use labs; at this meeting, faculty will give input on their current needs and concerns regarding labs.

News from ITS: Rod reported that additional resources have been allocated to the barracks (where more than 800 computers are connected to the network), and that he is asking for a workshop located in the barracks so cadets won't have to carry computers all the way to Bond Hall.  To facilitate better service, User Support is now responsible for ALL computer concerns (i.e., hardware, software & network) for labs and barracks, while Network Support is responsible for ALL computer concerns for faculty & staff.  Both Duckett and Jenkins Auditoriums are scheduled to get projectors over Christmas break; Bond 256 is also getting a new projector.  Finally, Rod asked committee members to be on the lookout for lab-managing software and academic software that might be useful to a large section of the faculty.

Next meeting: The committee will meet again on Tuesday, November 17 to review work on the new computer proposals and make final recommendations to COL Metts.
