Minutes of the Computer Services Committee First Meeting – Thursday, October 10, 2002
Present: Ken Brannan, Nancy Bell, Alix Darden, Mark DelMaestro, Debbie Fisher, Donna Gibson, Emily Gore, Hughes Hoyle. Absent: Frances Frame, Susan Simmons, Rod Welch.
- Alix Darden was elected Chair of the committee.
- The letter requesting new computers from the faculty was revised to include a question about whether faculty wanted a laptop or desktop computer. Alix will send the request out to all faculty via e-mail. When proposals come in, a subcommittee of 3-4 people will be formed to review the proposals and make a recommendation to the entire committee. It was suggested that the subcommittee agree on criteria for judging the proposals prior to scoring them.
- Alix will look at the charter that was posted last year and compare that information to what is being requested by Tom Thompson. If information is needed that is not available, Alix will make a recommendation via e-mail and invite an e-mail discussion.
- A subcommittee consisting of Emily Gore and Mark DelMaestro was formed to draft a letter to Faculty Council recommending that all incoming cadets be required to have a computer. In the past this has been opposed because it would require an increase for scholarships to include the price of a computer. This will potentially decrease the total number of scholarships that can be offered. Ward Logan in financial aid has some suggestions on how the computers could be covered without impacting on the number of scholarships given out. It would be useful if he were present when the proposal was made to faculty council.
- The question was raised as to whether students could bring laptops to class. Someone in Jenkins Hall needs to be checked with to see if there are restrictions on cadets carrying a laptop around campus. This would bear on the recommendation made to Faculty Council. Can it be stated that either a laptop or desktop is acceptable? The issue of securing the laptop in the barracks was also brought up.
