Strategic Planning Newsletter # 4 November 1, 1995 Folks: I would like to let any of you who are interested know the latest developments regarding the Citadel's Strategic Plan. As I mentioned at the end of the summer, a draft version of the Plan was submitted to General Watts in late August for his consideration. This version incorporated many of the changes suggested at the general meetings for faculty and staff and the meetings of the Strategic Planning Committee last spring. It included 18 major goals and 83 recommendations, as well as a general introduction, introductions to the particular sections, and timelines and responsibilities for accomplishment of each recommendation. Five copies of this document are still available on reserve in Daniel Library for anyone interested in perusing it. General Watts returned this document to me several weeks ago. He commended the work of the Strategic Planning Committee and indicated that he was sending copies of the Plan, without change, to the Board of Visitors for their consideration. I regard this as a significant affirmation of the work of the Committee and of the faculty, staff, and students who have contributed their time and effort to the Strategic Planning process over the past 18 months. Last week, in the next step of the process, I met with the Education sub-committee of the Board of Visitors, headed by Col. Frank Mood, which will make a recommendation for acceptance or revision, etc, to the full Board next month. That sub-committee was also very positive about the Plan as a whole and it too commended the work of all involved in the Plan's creation. All members of the Board are now reviewing the Plan and I expect that it will be voted on (and I hope that it will be approved) at the Board's November meeting. That would keep us on schedule to begin implementation of the Plan in the Spring, 1996 semester. I continue to think that adoption of the Strategic Plan is a very mportant step for the school and will result in significant improvements at The Citadel over the next five years. I am now optimistic that it will be approved in something very close to its present version. Once again, my thanks to all who made this possible. Peter Mailloux, Chair, Strategic Planning Committee
