Phi Alpha Theta

Epsilon Lambda Chapter

Phi Alpha Theta is the international history honors society. Successful sophomores, juniors and seniors who have an interest in history are invited to join each spring. We have a very active chapter here at the Citadel.

Phi Alpha Theta Offers its members:
  • 1. The opportunity to meet with professors and discuss research.
  • 2. A yearly history trip. In the past, students have visited Washington, D.C., upstate New York and Revolutionary War battle sites, New Orleans, Louisiana and St. Augustine, Florida.
  • 3. The opportunity to attend and present research at the annual national Phi Alpha Theta meeting.
  • 4. The chance to share a passion for history with other like-minded students.

Requirements for Admission:

Undergraduate: An undergraduate student must have completed at least twelve semester hours in history with a grade in all history courses averaging above a B (a 3.1 GPR in history courses at The Citadel). A student must also have a general average of at least the second highest grade in the working scale in at least two-thirds of the remainder of his/her work and must rank in the highest 35% of the class (a cumulative 3.0 GPR).

Graduate: A graduate student must have completed at least one-third of the residence requirements for the Masters Degree before becoming eligible for election to membership. Averages in all courses completed for graduate credit must be at least midway between the highest and second highest grade on the working scale, and no grade in the graduate record may be 'failure' or its equivalent.

Continued Supporting Memberships Initiation into a chapter of Phi Alpha Theta confers lifetime membership upon the individual. Payment of the initiation fee is the only financial expense for membership on the international level. However, there are three means of continuing to actively support the projects of Phi Alpha Theta. Sustaining Membership, an annual contribution of $40, entitles the individual to receive The Historian and The News Letter for one year with the balance exceeding subscription costs added to the endowment fund. A one year subscription rate to The Historian only is $20. There is also a $10 option which entitles a member to receive three issues of The News Letter.
