A Message from Mayor R. Keith Summey

I know that just as I love our wonderful city so do many others. We are all in a wonderful position to leave a legacy that reflects the way we feel about our city, neighborhoods, and homes. The cleanliness and beautification of North Charleston is a rewarding project. Not only is it important to us right now, but think about our grandchildren and generations to follow.

We have worked diligently for the last several years to create beautification programs that have a lasting impact. In the future, we will work to expand these highly successful programs in order to sustain the future beautification of North Charleston. As each of these programs grow so must our volunteer base. We need YOUR help!

The Clean Cities Sweep, awarded the title of best cleanup program in the United States by Keep America Beautiful, is our largest annual community beautification event. The City of North Charleston partners with the City of Charleston to have a cleanup each April that includes almost two thousand community volunteers. This event has become a week of community celebration and fellowship in North Charleston. During the 2007 Clean Cities Sweep, we had 1405 volunteers, we collected 8,135 trash bags full of litter and debris, and there were 1,335 flowerw, trees, or shrubs planted. More is accomplished during this one week than is believed possible. Teamwork is the key to our amazing success. Everywhere you look people are cleaning with their GLAD bags during this week. We are very proud of our program and the volunteers who make it possible.

Keep North Charleston Beautiful, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, that was established in August of 2000. Their goals include: promoting a positive image of North Charleston, empowering individuals to become involved in beautification efforts, developing new initiatives that result in litter reduction and enhance the overall landscape of North Charleston, supporting established partnerships while striving to build new partnerships, and maximizing the resources of Keep North Charleston Beautiful. I know that we have many talented people in the community; join Keep North Charleston Beautiful and share your talents. This may be one of the most important and appreciated gifts you ever give.

We need your help.  You can become a volunteer for events, join Keep North Charleston Beautiful and help plan activities, volunteer in the office, help maintain this webpage, and much more.
