Evaluating Internet Sources
Just as you can evaluate books and articles, you can evaluate the quality of
information
you find on the Internet.
Pros of Internet Research
- What are some positive uses of the Internet, particularly in science?
- What sorts of science topics would lend themselves to the Internet?
- What elements/features would you expect to find in a good science web site?
Cons of Internet Research
- What are some of the negative issues of the Internet?
- What sorts of topics/sites should you be wary of in using the Internet
science research?
- What elements or features would lead you to decide that a web site was
not appropriate for your research?
How is the Internet different from other sources of information, such as books
and journals?
How is conducting research on the Internet different from conducting research
in
academic/scholarly journals?
Evaluating Internet Sites
Be extremely careful in selecting material from the Internet to use in your research.
Just because something is on the Internet does not necessarily mean it is accurate,
useful,
or appropriate for your research.
Use the following questions to help evaluate an Internet site. If most of the
questions can be answered positively, the site may be appropriate for your research.
- Authority
- Who wrote this page (person or organization)?
- Does the author (or organization) have the credentials to put out
this information?
- Purpose
- What is the purpose of this site (advocacy, entertainment, marketing,
information)?
- Currency
- Is the date the site was put up (and/or last updated) provided?
- Coverage
- What is the breadth and depth of the coverage?
- Is only material that supports the author's point of view included,
or is information on other points of view provided?
- Accuracy
- Are sources given for information?
- Can they be verified?
- Is there a bias present?
