All-American Everette Sands, ’93, a bruising fullback who was a major force on the 1992 Southern Conference Championship team, highlights the list of five alumni who will be inducted into The Citadel Athletic Hall of Fame on November 6.

Other members of the Class of ’04 Hall of Fame are baseball player Howard Mikytuck’60; runner Wayne Timmerman, ’64; football player Joe Missar, ’65; and football supporter Charlie Baker, ’71, who enters as an honorary member. Mikytuck and Missar will be inducted posthumously.

The Citadel Athletic Hall of Fame originated in 1977. The five new inductees will increase the membership to 128.

Wayne Timmerman

For his accomplishments, Timmerman was named to the All-Southern Conference team. He was also a consistent Dean’s List student and was a Distinguished Military Student.

After graduating from The Citadel, Timmerman earned his law degree from the University of South Carolina and served as editor of the South Carolina Law Review. He served in the Air Force and attained the rank of captain in the Judge Advocate Corps. Timmerman currently resides in the Tampa area where he is a circuit court judge.

the ball, playing guard on offense and linebacker on defense. A three-year letter winner who served as co-captain his senior season, Missar earned first-team all-state and Associated Press Honorable Mention all-America honors. Twice he was named the Southern Conference Lineman of the Week (for his play against Army, despite losing 34-0, and against Davidson). Missar also received several Player of the Week awards from the Southern Conference.

Shortly after his graduation from The Citadel, Missar, a native of Towson, Md., was commissioned and joined the Marines as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was killed in action on May 6, 1966, at Quang Nam Province in Vietnam.

A second-team all-American fullback in 1992 who was twice named first-team all-Southern Conference, Sands is the school’s second most-prolific rusher (3,926 yards) and scorer (204 points).

He surpassed the 100-yard rushing mark 16 times during his career and was a major force running between the tackles when The Citadel captured the Southern Conference championship in ’92.

A native of Conway, Sands, who started 47 consecutive games, averaged 5.29 yards per carry for his career that included 34 touchdowns. A four-time letter winner, he teamed with quarterback Jack Douglas to form only the second duo in school history to rush for 1,000 or more yards in a single season. During his career, he was never tackled for a loss while never missing a game or practice. Sands served as an assistant football coach at The Citadel for the 1999 and 2000 seasons, and currently coaches the running backs at Ohio University.

Baker enters the Hall of Fame as an honorary inductee primarily for his work with the Alumni Football Association.

The AFA provides an avenue for past football athletes to promote and support the current football program. First organized in 1984, the AFA supports the program through a variety of ways and presents the annual “Blood and Guts Award” at the team banquet. Baker was instrumental in the formation of the organization and served as its president from 1984-2002.

A native of Raleigh, N.C., Baker was a fierce competitor on the gridiron from 1968-70, and teamed with all-American John Small to give the Bulldogs a tremendous linebacking corps. He owns Baker & Associates, a public relations and marketing firm in Charleston S.C.
