More sleep is bunk ('97 - letter to the editor)

Any change at The Citadel often receives harsh criticism from cadets and graduates who hold tradition in high regard. Sometimes the criticism is grounded. Other times, it is merely the ranting of someone upset that current cadets are getting off easy. I dislike any sentence that begins "back in the old corps," as cadets from each era face their own challenges that those from different periods don't understand.  ...

Scenes from a baseball boom

Again, the Atlanta Braves are not in the playoffs and don't bother waiting 'til next year. But aside from one of the few Smoltzless Octobers in your recent lifetime and Clemson missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 22 years, the 2008 season was full of highlights for players and teams with Palmetto State and Lowcountry ties.  By the numbers:

42

Home runs hit by former Citadel star Dallas McPherson while playing for the triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes. McPherson led all minor leaguers in homers and earned a promotion to the Florida Marlins.

Veterans pushed aside for VIP (letter to the editor)

... Bleachers were reserved for the 75th Air Depot Wing. As I waited for my friends to arrive, I began to be concerned when the band and the corps marched onto the field, and the vets had not arrived. The guest of honor for the parade was introduced. As I recall, the visiting dignitary (VIP) was the acting assistant for the under secretary of finance for the secretary of the Army. The members of the 75th were not allowed entrance to The Citadel grounds for the parade. The reason given was that a VIP was present and for security reasons, tour groups were not allowed on campus. ...

Leaves may change, but App St. doesn't

BOONE, N.C. — Upset-minded Citadel fans who made it up the steep grade past Possum Hollow and Blowing Rock had a chance Saturday to sample free chili from Sledgehammer Charlie's at a tent set up outside Kidd Brewer Stadium. Then it was mostly a diet of football indigestion, a 47-21 Southern Conference loss to Appalachian State's mighty Mountaineers. The halftime score was 41-7. ...

Mountaineers' Armanti hammers Bulldogs

BOONE, N.C. — Armanti's ankle? It's fine. Appalachian State's football identity? Intact. Any other questions were answered by the scoreboard at the south end of Kidd Brewer Stadium, where the 47-21 score provided a stark reminder of just how far The Citadel still has to go to join the elite football teams in the Southern Conference. ...

Apology for band (letter to the editor)

I feel I speak for the Princeton alumni community in extending a sincere apology for our band's behavior while guests of The Citadel recently. Our band has long been notorious for irreverent nonsense. To those of us who have suffered this immaturity for years, it is boring at best. To a host school, it is a pompous insult. The antics of our band is in no fashion representative of the majority of Princeton students, its football team or its alumni. ...

Yankee (Ask Elsa column)

Q: I don't understand why The Post and Courier continues to allow the term "Yankee" to be used in letters to the editor and other sections of your paper. It is obviously being used as a pejorative. If somebody wrote a letter to the editor complaining about "N..." music played by the Citadel, I'm sure it would never have been published. You folks continue to foster this idea that the word is used "all in fun". Well, it's not. It's used as a slur and it's about time you faced up to it.

A: There is no question that some people use "Yankee" as a slur. Some people also use "Democrat" that way or "Republican" or "politically correct." Had the reference been gratuitous and clearly insulting, the editor might have omitted it.

The recent letters which have used "Yankee" have referred specifically to martial music played by the Union (Yankee) troops during the Civil War. It is akin to referring to the Rebel yell.

Appalachian State still seeking its 'identity'

If there is one problem Appalachian State football would seem not to have, it's an identity problem.
