Recommended browsers:
After November of 2003, The Citadel's new web site will no longer support the Netscape 4 browser (refer to the new site's Welcome page). To take full advantage of the new web site, you are encouraged to upgrade to and begin using more recent browsers such as Internet Explorer 6 or Netscape 7 (both available for free, see How to Download). To see which version of Netscape or Internet Explorer you currently have, click Help -- About in your browser. (Users of slower computers, especially those below 500 MHz, should consider avoiding Netscape 7 due to its slow speed; Internet Explorer 6 is recommended for this case.)
How to download:
To download NS7 or IE6 onto your computer, click one of the links below and follow the installation instructions:
For Citadel faculty and staff only:
For Citadel faculty and staff only, if you need to upgrade your browser, you can enter a Hotline via http://hotline.citadel.edu/ to have a new browser installed on your computer. Please note there have been some reports of problems upgrading Netscape 4 email into Netscape 7 format, and some reports of decreased performance after installing Netscape 7, especially on slower computers. If speed is your major concern, Internet Explorer is recommended. Security should not be a concern, so long as you periodically install the latest patches for Internet Explorer and the Windows operating system.
Why we have ended support for Netscape 4 (NS4):
Beyond our Citadel borders, many web sites around the United States and the world are ending support for NS4 (whose share of the web browser market has dropped below 1%), in favor of the new HTML standards achieved in the version 5 and 6 browsers. Thus, users of NS4 have an increasingly hard time accessing web sites located in the United States and other countries, because many web pages are unreadable in NS4.
The decision to end support for NS4 browsers was made based on statistical trends in browser usage (for a representative article, please click this link: upsdell.com). In summary, a combined 93% of web site visitors use IE5 or IE6. Only 1% use NS4. An increasing number of visitors use NS6 or later. This provides the justification to end support for Netscape 4.
The Citadel's web pages will continue to be viewable in NS4, but will not be as useful when viewed in this outdated browser. Over time, an increasing number of features will be added to The Citadel's web site that will not be useable in NS4. To take full advantage of the new web site, you are encouraged to upgrade.
