The Department of Biology Mission
The primary mission of the Department of Biology is to offer training, courses, and degrees in the Life Sciences to five groups of Citadel students. These groups include undergraduates fulfilling the science requirement in the college’s core curriculum; undergraduate Biology majors; undergraduates fulfilling science pre-requisites to apply for the BS in Nursing Program; Health and Physical Education students enrolled in the Department’s two service courses; and graduate students working toward either the Master of Arts in Biology or Master of Arts in Teaching degree. We strive to provide every student in our program with an immersive learning experience led by faculty who are leaders in their field. The department maintains a rigorous, supportive, collaborative and inclusive academic and research environment that will prepare students for diverse careers and advanced study, while empowering them to become biologically literate members of society.
In addition, the Department contributes to the discipline through scholarly and professional activity and to the state and local community through participation in various service related activities. Two Biology faculty members also serve as Pre-Health Advisors. More Pre-Health Information is posted on the Pre-Health Advising web page.
