B.A. in Political Science (Degree Completion Program)
The degree completion program in political science (Pre-Law and Legal Studies subfield) was created in 2014. The program provides students with an opportunity to receive a four-year degree from The Citadel. The Political Science degree program was first established in 1941; since that time, several thousand students have graduated from The Citadel with this degree.
The Department
As one of the largest and fasting growing departments at The Citadel, PSCI is home to about 140+ undergraduate students, 23 graduate students, 7 full-time faculty members, one visiting Professor and two staff members. We are also proud to host The Citadel’s West Chair Professor. In terms of majors, the Department of Political Science is the third largest department on campus.
Credits from another institution are evaluated according to The Citadel policy.
Majoring in Political Science
The major affords students an opportunity to obtain a broad liberal arts education that enriches their lives and acquaints them with the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. As a central element of a liberal arts education, political science provides preparation for graduate education and for the pursuit of useful and satisfying careers.
While our faculty represents a wide variety of theoretical and methodological approaches, we share a strong interest in solving the puzzles of contemporary political life. The faculty carry out this mission by providing individualized attention. Students enhance their critical-thinking and problem-solving skills while further honing real-life skills related to reading, writing, listening and speaking.
Political Science as a Career
Students completing degrees in Political Science will find a variety of career opportunities. Some of these majors go on to graduate school or law school, for which our program offers excellent preparation. The program also offers an excellent background for the U.S. Foreign Service, general governmental employment (local, state, federal), trade groups and associations, campaign management and political consulting, journalism and business.
