DEAN’S MESSAGE

Welcome to the Web home of the Citadel’s School of Science and Mathematics. The School offers eight major programs of study leading to bachelor’s degrees, nine minor programs and two master’s degree programs. It also provides broad inter-school instructional support to the core curriculum, and its highly qualified faculty devote enormous effort and energy to teaching while actively engaging in scholarship and service to the Low Country, the State and the Nation. Our learning neighborhood is characterized by small class sizes, an abundance of personal attention, and ample opportunity for interaction between faculty and students.

The School contributes to the exceptional Citadel experience by fostering an environment in which curious minds are encouraged to develop and flourish. Students in the School of Science and Mathematics are challenged by their professors and peers to work hard, enjoy their studies, and realize their full potential. Our goal is to make The Citadel a place where students learn science and mathematics by doing science and mathematics in collaboration with their peers and professors. We continually strive to enhance the learning environment, expand opportunities for independent study and undergraduate research, and promote a culture of interdisciplinary cooperation linked with individual creativity.

Our graduates will face unprecedented challenges related to national security, environmental and energy policy, economic competitiveness, health and wellness, and as yet to emerge areas, all of which will significantly involve one or more of the sciences. We recognize our responsibility to prepare our students in the fields represented by the School to respond effectively to these challenges while imbuing them with the ethical principles that will enable them to use their skills and knowledge for the common good. Ultimately our success will be gauged not only by the individual achievements of our students, but also by the contributions they make to the benefit and welfare of society.
