The Citadel Fund

The Citadel Fund provides unrestricted funds to The Citadel to cover those vital expenses that may not be covered by state appropriations or tuition and fees. Such costs include:

  • Normal and emergency maintenance
  • Unbudgeted utility costs
  • Scholarships
  • Recruiting and fundraising expenses
  • Special projects that are essential for maintaining good community relations

The Citadel Fund - Emergency Reserve
The Citadel reserves approximately $500,000 per year in an emergency contingency account from a $62 Million annual operating budget. This year, increased utilities prices wiped out $430,000 of the college's contingency account, leaving less than $70,000 for emergencies-an unacceptably low amount for normal operating conditions.

The Citadel Fund - Academic scholarships
While The Citadel has more than 250 individual scholarship endowments restricted to a variety of award criteria, each year The Citadel Scholarship Committee falls short of having sufficient unrestricted scholarship funds to build a freshman class with a diverse group of students. Unrestricted funds for scholarships ensure the college is able to recruit top students with high academic credentials who are competitive at all colleges. Typically, the college requires up to $500,000 in unrestricted funds for academic scholarships annually.

The Citadel Fund - Athletic scholarships
Each year, The Citadel awards $1.8 million in athletic scholarships. Even with this sum, the college is only supporting 144 of 180 NCAA authorized athletic scholarships. In addition to the extraordinary annual support of The Citadel Brigadier Foundation, the athletic department typically requires $600,000-$900,000 in unrestricted funds each year. These unrestricted funds are used for grant-in-aid scholarships not covered by athletic scholarship fundraising and revenue generation. State appropriations and tuition dollars cannot be used to support athletic scholarship programs.

The Citadel Fund - Federal matching grant money
The Citadel occasionally receives grants from the Federal Government which by law require matching funds from uncommitted, unrestricted funds. By definition, these funds must be secured from outside of the college's existing operating budget; therefore, unrestricted contributions to The Citadel Fund serve a vital purpose as matching funds to enable the college to capitalize on new opportunities and external sources of support.

The Citadel Fund - Covers legal expenses
Every college in America, like any other business, is faced with lawsuits from time-to-time. The Citadel has successfully thwarted large financial judgments from lawsuits by settling out of court. This is not necessarily because the college was at fault, but because in court an institution of the size and stature of The Citadel is perceived by some as an appealing target. The funds used to settle out of court must come from our unrestricted funds.

The Citadel Fund - Activities necessary for growth
In an effort to become more self-sufficient and less dependent upon revenue streams which the college cannot always influence, it is critical for The Citadel to continue its recent efforts to increase its capacity to supplement the operation of the college from private sources. Fundraising expenses for annual operations, scholarships and other unrestricted needs as well as donor relationship building events, stewardship and recognition, and governmental activities must come from unrestricted funds.

The Citadel Fund - Good community relations
The Citadel hosts Boys' State each summer with $40,000 of unrestricted funds. Boy's State was developed by the American Legion in 1935 to inspire young men to become active in government and politics. Today, every state except Hawaii conducts Boy's State. The Citadel has hosted Boy's State on its campus 33 times since its inception in South Carolina in 1940. Boy's State is a tremendously powerful recruiting tool for the college and allows hundreds of boys each year to experience the flavor of The Military College of South Carolina.
