The Citadel Regimental Band and Pipes: A Journey Interrupted by COVID-19
The Citadel Regimental Band and Pipes were set to represent the United States at the prestigious Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Scotland in 2020. This invitation marked the fourth time the band would have performed in what is known as the world’s most famous military music festival. The band, composed of approximately 80 cadets, had been preparing for over a year under the leadership of music director Timothy Smith and pipes director Jim Dillahey.
In 2019, Brigadier David Alfrey, chief executive and producer of the Tattoo, extended a warm invitation to The Citadel, recognizing the band’s past performances and expressing eagerness to showcase their talents once again. Citadel President Glenn M. Walters proudly accepted the invitation, emphasizing the honor and excitement felt by the cadets.

However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo was canceled, bringing a sudden halt to the band’s plans. This decision, while disappointing, was understood as a necessary measure to ensure the safety of the public and participants from around the world. The cancellation was especially hard for the seniors who had dedicated countless hours to preparing for this international stage, but the band remains hopeful for future opportunities to perform at the Tattoo.
Despite the setback, The Citadel Regimental Band and Pipes continue to be a symbol of excellence and dedication, representing Charleston and South Carolina with pride. Their planned participation in the 2020 Tattoo would have continued their tradition of international performances, having previously taken the stage in 1991, 2010, and 2015. The band remains the only U.S. military college band to have been invited to perform at the Tattoo, a testament to their outstanding reputation and musical prowess.
Looking ahead, The Citadel Regimental Band and Pipes are committed to maintaining their high standards and look forward to showcasing their talents on future stages around the world.
