2023 – 2024 Academic Year
Matt Roughgarden
Wednesday, March 20 at 9:00 a.m.
Franchise Owner
After graduating from The Citadel in 1973, Matt completed his active duty in the US Army and began his career in business, starting as a sales rep and moving on to buy or start sixteen companies. The companies varied in mission and included sales agencies, polystyrene recycling, commercial and residential real estate, importing, and retail bakeries. All but four of the companies are still in business.
Matt began with Merchants Sales Company as a territory representative. Eighteen years later, he and a partner bought the company. At the time of purchase, the company’s annual sales were $24 million, and when Matt sold his interest in 2020, sales were $550 million. The other companies founded were smaller niche businesses that offered an attractive ROI. Matt is still actively working with seven of the companies.
During his career, Matt was involved in every aspect of these businesses, including sales, marketing, finance, human resources, strategic planning, contracting, and purchasing. With all the companies, Matt applied two ideals he learned at The Citadel: the Citadel honor code and the leadership principle of “with great authority comes great responsibility.”
Matt and his wife Nancy have been married for 47 years. Currently, Matt is on three corporate boards, including the Brigadier Foundation. He enjoys reading, fishing, personal fitness, college sports, professional boxing, and working.
