The Pre-Health Society is a club for all students who are interested in Health-Related Professions. Meeting notifications available for those who “Follow” the Facebook page “Pre-Health Society – The Citadel – CC” newsfeed. The club advisors are Dr. Kathy Zanin and Dr. Patrice Capers. More Pre-Health Information is published on the Pre-Health Information Page.
Pre-Health students at The Citadel can also join our club’s Canvas group. Please email Dr. Zanin with your Citadel email address to be added. You will be able to join a group based on your career interests and get updates about upcoming opportunities. Meetings include presentations from representatives of Medical Schools, Dental Schools, Pharmacy Schools, Public Health Schools, and others. Students who have participated in health-related internships also give presentations. As community service, the club has hosted shrimp dinners and sold t-shirts as fundraisers for Wounded Nature and for the VA Hospital, and has raised breast cancer awareness and funds for Hollings Cancer Center.

Jan. 29, 2019: Socialized Health Care Discussion with Dr. Dov Rotenberg. Dr. Rotenberg did his undergraduate as well as Medical University studies at the University of Toronto in Ontario Canada, graduating in 1972.Dr. Dov Rotenberg did his undergraduate as well as Medical University studies at the University of Toronto in Ontario Canada, graduating in 1972. After working for approximately 2 years as a primary physician in Family Medicine he did a residency in Ear Nose & Throat (Otolaryngology) and then traveled to the Eye and Ear Hospital of Pittsburgh where he did a 1 year post graduate Fellowship in otologic and neuro otologic surgery. He returned to Toronto Ontario Canada and worked both in private practice and at the University of Toronto medical school for approximately 13 years. In 1993 he was recruited to an American hospital and worked as a ENT surgeon in Waterloo Iowa from 1993 until retirement in 2015. He retired from active Medical Practice in October 2015, moved to the Charleston area with his wife where he continues to lead an extremely happy and satisfying life in this wonderful area

To kick off our Quit the Spit and Trash the Ash Tobacco Cessation Campaign, on April 14, 2016 The Pre-Health Society sponsored a talk by Dr. Mike Cummings to help students, faculty and staff learn “The Truth About Tobacco.” It was fascinating to learn how the tobacco industry tries to hook young people on their deadly product, just so they can get richer – a diabolical way to make money.
April 13-15, 2016 The Pre-Health Society’s new President Ivan Dingle and Vice President Dillon Graham attended the 15th annual Gulf Summit Service Learning Conference in Savannah at Georgia Southern University. The conference promotes “Service-Learning and Civic Engagement through Higher Education.” They presented a poster by former President Matt Scalise about our 2015 Cadets for a Cure Initiative. This gave our club national exposure, and allowed our leaders to see what service others are doing across the country. Two years ago Pre-Health Society Vice President Matt Scalise started a campaign called “Cadets for a Cure” to raise money and campus awareness of breast cancer, and our club donated more than $1,000 to patients at MUSC’s Hollings Cancer Center. In 2015 as the club’s President, he led our members in a campaign that was even was bigger and better. He procured a private donation of $5,000 from Scalise Realty along with t-shirt donations; and he led a campaign that inspired nearly 70 Citadel students to volunteer at the Komen Race for a Cure on Daniel Island on October 17; also, through a dinner at Fuel restaurant, raffle ticket and t-shirt sales and sponsoring knob movie night, club members raised an additional $3,500 to donate.
The Pre-Health Society presented the $8,500 to Hollings Cancer Center on Wednesday, November 18 at 4:45 PM (video here). We also recognized a business called Exam Krackers that donated a set of MCAT prep books as a prize for the cadet who sold the most raffle tickets – a prize that really motivated students to sell more apple watch raffle tickets. We received a lovely thank you note from Hollings Cancer Center.
As part of the Cadets for a Cure Campaign, Pre-Health Members and friends volunteered at the Komen Race for the Cure on Daniel Island. Komen produced this video and sent us this note to thank the club and The Citadel for their participation.
2014:
In October 2014 The Pre-Health Society established “Cadets for a Cure.” We worked to raise cancer awareness and to raise funds for Patient Support Services at Hollings Cancer Center through ribbon and wrist band sales. Cadet Matt Scalise was the founder of this campaign. We raised more than $1,000. A check was presented to Kiki Cooper of MUSC’s Giving Office on Dec. 5, 2014.
In September 2014, a panel of distinguished alumni hosted “Meet the Experts” where students learned about various medical and dental specialties.
In February 2014, The Pre-Health Society Hosted a panel of alumni who shared the “Secrets of their Success” with students at The Citadel.
On October 24, 2012 The Pre-Health Society and BioCid co-hosted a Low Country Shrimp Boil Fundraiser that raised $650 to support Wounded Nature (an organization that employs veterans to clean up beaches and increase environmental awareness). Students worked all day selling tickets, shopping, chopping, cooking, serving, and cleaning up; making the event a huge success.
