A course in which 100% of the course contact hours meet face-to-face on campus or at an institutionally approved location. Face-to-face (F2F) indicates that the faculty and all the students registered for the class are in the same physical location at the same time. Methods of instruction are direct instruction using active learning strategies or lab-based.

Online Asynchronous
A course in which instruction is conducted solely online within The Citadel’s approved learning management system (Canvas). Students complete coursework “asynchronously,” meaning not at the same time, but within deadlines.
- Participation in discussion boards is required every week as evidence of active participation and regular and substantive interaction.
- All course materials, syllabi, grades, handouts, video lectures, assignments, etc. must be posted online within The Citadel’s approved learning management system (Canvas).
- All student work must be submitted via Canvas including work done in a third-party vendor.
- Faculty will post online office hours in the course syllabus.
- Days/times/room locations are NOT listed in the course schedule as there are no meeting times.

Online Synchronous
An online course that meets at the same time for the entire duration of the course as indicated in the class schedule. Faculty are required to use The Citadel’s approved video-conferencing tool (Zoom) to deliver instruction, work with groups of students, or conduct seminars. This course is best suited for a cohort of students who need to work together on projects.
- Participation in discussion boards is required every week as evidence of active participation and regular and substantive interaction.
- All course materials, syllabi, grades, handouts, video lectures, assignments, etc. must be posted online within The Citadel’s approved learning management system (Canvas).
- All student work must be submitted via Canvas including work done in a third-party vendor.

Hybrid
A course where all students meet 50% face-to-face in-person on campus or at an institutionally approved location and 50% online asynchronously. In this model, face-to-face instruction is reduced, but not eliminated, and indicates that the faculty and all the students registered for the class are in the same physical location at the same time.

Hi-Flex Synchronous
A course in which a combination of students meets either face-to-face or online synchronously. 100% of the course contact hours meet either face-to-face on campus, at an institutionally approved location, or online. The faculty member will teach on-campus or at an institutionally approved location. Faculty are required to use The Citadel’s approved video-conferencing tool (Zoom) to deliver instruction, work with groups of students, or conduct seminars. In coordination with the instructor, students choose at the beginning of the semester which location works best for them, either on-ground or online. This modality is primarily for graduate courses but may be considered for special undergraduate classes by prior approval of the Associate Provost for Academic Affairs.

Research
An approved learning experience that allows students to earn credit outside of a traditional classroom. Students are guided by a faculty in independent research projects and do not take classes with other students in a traditional classroom setting. The student works independently. The student and instructor agree upon a research project outside of the classroom. These classes are a way to gain research experience.

Clinical Internships
A course that represents any official or formal program to provide practical work experience for beginners in an occupation or profession. The experience of the students for a clinical internship is expected to be on-ground at a work site.
- Dates/times may be listed in the course schedule if the faculty member has consistent meetings over the semester. The faculty member may set up individual schedules with the students to check on their progress during an internship and in this case, no meeting times would be listed.

Practicum
A course, especially one in a specialized field of study, is designed to give students supervised practical application of previously studied theory. A practicum is structured practical experience in a professional program, supervised by a practitioner and/or faculty member with whom the student works closely. The students do most of their learning on the ground, at an approved practicum site.

Thesis
A thesis is a compilation of research that proves the student is knowledgeable about the information learned throughout a graduate program. It is normally done one-on-one with a faculty advisor with no lecture component. The delivery modality is determined by an agreement between the faculty and the student.
