Colonel Asbury Coward, CSA (1890-1908)
Asbury Coward was born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1835 and graduated from The Citadel in 1854. He and his classmate, Micah Jenkins, established the King’s Mountain Military School in Yorkville, South Carolina in 1855.
During the Civil War, Colonel Coward served in the campaigns of 1862 and Longstreet’s campaign in Georgia and Tennessee. In 1866, he reopened King’s Mountain Military School and maintained its usefulness and prestige, despite the extreme poverty in the state.
In 1890, Colonel Coward was named Superintendent of The Citadel, where he remained until 1908. He died in 1925.
