War Between The States
There were 224 living Citadel graduates when South Carolina announced it was seceding from the Union and 209 served in the confederate armed forces during the period referred to as The War Between the States (1861-1865). Of the 15 who did not serve 5 were ministers of the gospel, 2 were physicians, 2 civilian engineers for the confederate government, 1 railway official, 3 resided in California and one was studying in Germany.
Indian Wars
Numerous Citadel Alumni traveled West to settle before and after The War Between The States.
World War I
During World War I, 316 Citadel graduates and an undetermined number of alumni served in Europe.
Korean War
Several thousand Citadel alumni were on duty when the Korean War broke out.
Vietnam War
Captain Terry Cordell was the first American officer to fall in Vietnam, and 58,000 American servicemen followed him, to include 76 known Citadel alumni. Four of our alumni earned the Distinguished Service Cross and 1 earned the Navy Cross—all for “extraordinary heroism”. Most of the list below are graduates, all of whom died on or near the field of battle as a result of hostile action, wounds, or illness in the battle zone. Alumni are constantly being researched and listed as we discover their names. If you have additional information on those Citadel alumni who may have met the same fate as those listed below, please provide all information so their sacrifice is recognized.
When visiting the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, DC, the panel and row (listed below) may be used to locate the name of that particular Citadel alumnus.

Lebanon, Grenada, Persian Gulf War
One Citadel alumnus died in each of these conflicts: Lebanon, Grenada, and the Persian Gulf War.
War on Terrorism
Throughout The Citadel’s history, the military college has produced scores of graduates who have selflessly served their country, often giving their lives, to protect our freedom and the freedom of our allies. As we fight the war on terrorism in Afghanistan, Iraq and other regions, we are proud to recognize our cadets and graduates who are continuing that tradition.
