Referring for Services
Referral for Students: If a student’s needs extend beyond the expertise of the provider, the student will be referred to off-campus counseling resources. Expenses incurred off campus are the student’s responsibility.
Referral for Employees: Citadel employees are not eligible for counseling services at the clinic. Employees are encouraged to contact Human Resources or the Employee Assistance Program (800-633-3353).
How to Refer a Student for Counseling or Psychiatric Services at MUSC Health at The Citadel
A student’s inability to cope effectively with stress can have a negative impact on the student’s personal and academic functioning. Students, faculty, staff, family members and friends can intervene when they encounter distressed students.
Suggestions for How to Refer Students for Counseling
- Encourage the student to call or come to the clinic to make an appointment
- Provide the clinic phone number – 843-953-4827, and location – Citadel Infirmary
- Call while you are with the student, then offer the phone to the student to schedule
- Follow-up by asking the student as to whether the student kept the appointment

Confidentiality
By law, licensed mental health providers are not permitted to give any information to others unless the student has given specific written permission. Students, faculty, staff, family members and friends are encouraged to ask the student directly about their appointment.

Marked Change in Academic Performance or Behavior
- Poor performance and preparation, excessive absences, or tardiness
- Avoiding participation, isolation from classmates, or anxious when called upon

- Describe your observations of the student’s distress or change in behavior
- Express your concern for the student’s wellbeing and your willingness to help
- Talk in a private setting when you are not rushed or preoccupied
- Listen carefully and be empathic.

- Restate your concerns and the available options
- Remind the student about confidentiality
- Remain open and available to help in the future
- Suggest that the student take some time to think it over
