Entry and Advancement Requirements for the Secondary Education, B.S. Transfer Program
To successfully progress through the program and meet all requirements for graduation and teacher licensure, students must adhere to the following entry and advancement criteria:
Admission to Upper-Level Education Courses
To be eligible for upper-level education courses, teacher candidates must:
- Receive advisor approval regarding their suitability and interest in teacher education.
- Have official passing scores on all three parts of the PRAXIS I exam on file at The Citadel.
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.750 or higher for coursework taken at The Citadel.
- Successfully complete EDUC 101.
Admission to the Student Teaching Internship (EDUC 499)
Teacher candidates must formally apply for the student teaching internship both to The Citadel and to the South Carolina State Department of Education at least two semesters before the internship begins. The South Carolina State Department of Education will review each candidate’s background and provide a “cleared” or “not cleared” status to The Citadel based on suitability for teaching. If concerns arise, the candidate must address these directly with the South Carolina Department of Education.
The Citadel’s application packet is reviewed by the Director of Field Experiences and Internships, along with the Teacher Education faculty. Once approved, students are notified of their admission to the internship. To begin the student teaching internship, candidates must meet the following requirements:
Acceptable disposition evaluations:
- Complete all required professional education courses and content coursework with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.750.
- Successfully complete all previous field experiences.
- Have official records of the appropriate PRAXIS I, PRAXIS II, and PRAXIS II – Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) scores on file at The Citadel.
- Receive clearance from the South Carolina State Department of Education based on FBI and SLED background checks.
*Note: It is strongly recommended that students take the PLT as soon as they have completed EDUC 101, EDUC 202 and EDUC 312.
Graduation Requirements
To qualify for graduation and teacher licensure, the Teacher Candidate must:
- Fulfill all academic requirements for the teaching field with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.750.
- Have official passing scores for PRAXIS I, PRAXIS II, and the PLT exams on file.
- Achieve a grade of “B” or better in EDUC 499 to be eligible for a recommendation for South Carolina teacher licensure (certification).
