Richard A. (Rick) Day ’77
RICHARD A. (RICK) DAY is a Vice President with Stantec Consulting Services Inc., a multi-disciplined engineering and planning firm with offices throughout North America and abroad. Rick leads Stantec’s local office in North Charleston and serves as the firm’s Regional Business Leader for the transportation engineering practice in South Carolina and 12 other southeastern states. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from The Citadel and a master’s degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Rick is a registered professional engineer in five (5) southeastern states and has practiced civil engineering for over forty (40) years. Throughout his career, he has served in a leadership role in numerous significant engineering projects. Currently, he is serving as the project manager for the planning and design for the widening of I-526 in Charleston County from Paul Cantrell Blvd. to Virginia Avenue, an estimated $1.1 billion program. Rick has been active in a number of professional engineering societies throughout his career. He has served these organizations in leadership roles at the local, state and national levels. Rick was awarded the Herman J. Hoose Distinguished Service Award in 2016 from the Southern District Institute of Transportation Engineers. He and his wife, Kathy, have two grown children and five grandchildren.
Donald E. Stone, Jr. ’80
DONALD E. STONE, JR., is chief executive officer of Dewberry, a 2,200-person engineering, architecture and construction firm with more than 50 office nationwide. This month he is celebrating 10 years as Dewberry’s CEO and 12 years with the firm overall, which he joined as chief operating officer in 2008.
Don graduated from The Citadel in 1980. During his freshman year he enlisted in the National Guard, 42nd Infantry Division, completing basic and advance training and airborne school. Upon graduation, as a Distinguished Military Student, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and branched to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Following his active duty military service, Don joined O’Brien & Gere engineers in 1983 serving in various technical and leadership positions during his 25-year tenure. His corporate leadership positions included director of corporate business development, chief operating officer, president of the firm’s Total Water Solutions division, and director on the firm’s Board of Directors. As COO, Don’s responsibilities involved overall operational management and development and implementation of a five-year strategic plan. As president of Total Water Solutions, he spearheaded the creation of a special purpose entity to allow for the project financing of design/build/own/operate water and wastewater facilities. Additionally, he developed technology launch platforms for the deployment of innovative water and wastewater treatment technologies. Don also established the corporate technology and project development groups to enhance technology innovation and expertise.
As Dewberry’s CEO, Don focuses on growing the firm so it may provide exciting opportunities for employees. He actively leads and implements Dewberry’s corporate and market strategies, corporate growth initiatives, and has achieved company consolidation and alignment so the firm may better serve its robust client portfolio. Over the past 10 years, he has also integrated six acquisitions, adding more than 350 employees to the firm and contributing to Dewberry’s continued expansion into the Southeast and California.
Don has recently launched Dewberry’s 2020-2025 Strategic Plan with all 2,200 employees. Don recommended to the Board of Directors that future leaders develop the firm’s new Vision statement and has challenged all employees and their leaders to understand how they contribute to the plan’s success. He is a licensed professional engineer in 19 states and a member of The Society of American Military Engineers. He and his wife, Leslie, met in kindergarten, and they enjoy spending quality time with their two daughters and spoiling their two granddaughters.
Robert L. Van Antwerp, Jr.
LIEUTENANT GENERAL ROBERT L. VAN ANTWERP, JR., known to most simply as General Van. Van is currently the Vice Chairman of the Flippen Group, a Texas-based leadership and organizational development company that specializes in talent assessment, development, and alignment. Van is widely respected across industry and the military as a “leader of leaders,” embodying the traits of successful leadership throughout his long and varied career working with civilians and the military. He effortlessly combines his extensive leadership experience with the Flippen Group’s tools and processes as he works to accelerate growth in leadership teams. In addition to providing executive development for clients and leadership keynotes, Van is former chairman of the board of Eagle Creek Renewable Energy LLC, board director at USAA, Calibre, Cardno GS, and is on several advisory boards for non-profits.
Van retired from the Army after 39 years of service and most recently served as chief of engineers and commanding general of the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). He was the senior military officer overseeing a $40+ billion program including most of the nation’s civil works infrastructure and military construction on 250 Army and Air Force installations worldwide. As the USACE commanding general, Van was responsible for over 37,000 employees who provided engineering, project management, construction, and operation and maintenance support in nearly 100 countries around the world. He led the Corps in the $12 billion Hurricane Katrina rebuild program.
Van’s other assignments include Chief of Staff, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; Assistant Chief of Staff for Installation Management, Washington, DC; Director, Office of Competitive Sourcing, Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army (Research, Development and Acquisition), Washington, DC; Executive Assistant to the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Washington, DC; Executive Officer, Office of the Chief of Engineers, Washington, D.C.; Chief, Military Engineering and Construction Division, U.S. Army Western Command, Fort Shafter, Hawaii; Executive Officer, 84th Engineer Battalion, 45th General Support Group, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii; and Instructor, Department of Mechanics, U.S. Military Academy, West Point, New York.
Van is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and holds an MBA from Long Island University and an MS in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan. He is a registered professional engineer.
Van and his wife, Paula, have three sons, Jeff, Luke, and Robby; two daughters, Julia and Kathryn; and nineteen grandchildren. They reside in North Carolina.
Glenn M. Walters ’79
GENERAL GLENN M. WALTERS, United States Marine Corps, Class of 1979, returned to his alma mater after serving 39 years as an officer in the Marines. Prior to his arrival, he served as the 34th Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps, the Corps’ second-highest ranking officer. GENERAL GLENN M. As Assistant Commandant, Walters oversaw approximately 184,000 active duty and 38,000 reserve Marines and a $42 billion budget. His duties included representing the Marine Corps at the Department of Defense and leading decisions about defense policy and resourcing in alignment with the National Defense Strategy. Among his other positions, Walters served as Deputy Commandant for Programs and Resources; Commanding General of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing; Commander of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing (Forward) in Helmand Province, Afghanistan; and Deputy Director of the Joint Staff J-8.
In 1979, upon graduating from The Citadel with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Walters was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps. After initially serving as an infantry officer, he attended flight training in Pensacola, Florida, and was designated a naval aviator in 1981. Walters later trained and served as a test pilot and was instrumental in testing systems for the AH-1W Super Cobra Attack Helicopter. He also served as the first Commander of VMX-22, the initial squadron to field the MV-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft for operational testing. He deployed overseas on numerous occasions in the Pacific and Central Command theaters, including Korea, the Arabian Gulf and Afghanistan.
Walters’ military awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal with Star, the Air Medal, and numerous campaign and unit awards.
In April 2018, Walters was selected by The Citadel’s Board of Visitors as the 20th President of the college.
General Walters is joined by his wife Gail. A marketing and communications professional, she eagerly embraces her role as The Citadel’s First Lady.
