Grants Available for Corps of Cadets
Grants are a form of financial aid, many of which are need based and do not need compensation. They cover a variety of education related expenses, such as tuition and fees, room and board, and books and supplies. The Citadel wants every student to have equal access to education and will help students find aid they are eligible for. There are several grants available to corps of cadets, including need-based grants and athletic grants.
Federal Pell Grants
The Federal Pell Grant program provides federal grants for eligible undergraduate students. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) determines eligibility. A nationally mandated formula reviews applicants. Grant amounts are dependent on the cadet’s expected family contribution (EFC), the cost of attendance (as determined by the institution), the student’s enrollment status (full-time or part-time), and the number of semesters attended each year.
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (SEOG)
The FSEOG Program provides need-based grants to low-income undergraduate students to promote access to postsecondary education. Priority is given to those cadets with “exceptional need” (those with the lowest expected family contributions [EFCs]) and those who are also Federal Pell Grant recipients.
Corps of cadets eligible for grants will be notified of their award via Lesesne Gateway.
South Carolina Need-Based Grant Program
Only corps of cadets that are South Carolina residents receive South Carolina Need-Based Grants. These residents must demonstrate the need, on a first-come, first-served basis. File the FAFSA each year to demonstrate need. A cadet may receive up to $2,500 annually for full time status.
Athletic Grants-in-Aid
The Citadel competes in the Southern Conference in wrestling, baseball, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross-country, football, women’s soccer, men’s and women’s track, women’s volleyball, men’s tennis, and women’s golf. The Citadel also offers varsity men’s and women’s rifle. The football team at The Citadel competes at the NCAA Division 1-AA level. All other sports are NCAA Division 1.
The Citadel offers some athletic grants for corps of cadets. If you are a Division 1-AA level football player or a Division 1 level athlete in any of the other sports, please contact the appropriate coach. The coaches will need a detailed resume of athletic achievements, letters of recommendation from qualified coaches, and a videotape of your competition performance to evaluate how you might fit into our athletic program.
