The Citadel’s first full-time academic faculty member in the Fine Arts, Tiffany Reed Silverman first came to campus in 2008 to teach an Art Appreciation course. Since then, she has taught this course every semester and has developed new courses such as Photography and Visual Perception that led to the creation of the Fine Arts minor in 2014, now one of the largest minors in the school. She led the Citadel in DC Summer program for three terms and the Summer STEAM Camp for middle school students in partnership with The Citadel’s STEM Center of Excellence. Silverman also connects Fine Arts cadets to the Charleston community with internships both in the arts and in corporations that appreciate their visually oriented skill sets.
As the Director of Fine Arts, Silverman facilitates transformative experiences at the intersection of the arts, the military, and the community. Most recently, she curated “Behind the Lines: Combat Artists and The Citadel Experience,” the first exhibition in the Winfred B. Moore, Jr. Art Gallery in Capers Hall which has engaged over 4,000 visitors and has an accompanying publication. Other events include a lecture by Monuments Men author Robert Edsel with actor Bill Murray that had 1,500 attendees, a site-specific installation of artist Mary Edna Fraser’s campus-inspired batiks as The Citadel’s first entry into Piccolo Spoleto, the launch of watercolor artist Mary Whyte’s book of portraits of veterans called We the People, and the Charleston Strong mural that stretches a city block to engage the community in a public memorial for the Emanuel 9. Silverman speaks about The Citadel’s Fine Arts programs at local events such as Pecha Kucha, the Roper St. Francis Leadership Lecture Series, and The Citadel Alumni Club Breakfast.
A board member of the Charleston Museum and the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, Silverman also serves on the City of Charleston’s Commission on the Arts and on the advisory board of the Patriot Art Foundation. She has been honored with The Citadel’s first Excellence in Teaching Award given to a non-tenure track faculty member, as well as the Campus Compact of South Carolina Faculty Award for Service Learning, the Krause Center Service Learning Fellowship, and the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award. Prior to The Citadel, Silverman was an Adjunct Professor in the Arts Management program at the College of Charleston, a freelance writer for Art & Antiques Magazine, and the Director of Education at the Gibbes Museum of Art.
