Leah María Suárez, one of Charleston’s premier vocalists, will lead her jazz ensemble in a Celebration of Women in Jazz in the newly-opened Capers Hall at The Citadel, on Thursday, March 21 at 6:30 p.m. In honor of the 25th anniversary of women at The Citadel, this special evening concert during Women’s History month will pay homage to key women who have made significant contributions to the formation and progression of America’s unique art form. This is also the inaugural concert supported by the Bo Moore Fund for Performances in Jazz and Blues Music to recognize the esteemed artistic leadership of School of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean Winfred B. Moore, Jr. upon his retirement.
Music selections for this program will include dedications to female pioneers of the genre such as Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, and more. The evening will feature a range of styles, from blues to swing, from bebop to bossa nova. Leah will also perform her original composition, “City by the Sea,” that was commissioned by The Citadel in 2016.
