Discover The Citadel’s Club Sports
The Intramural, Club, and Recreational Athletics’ (ICRA) Club Sports program provides the structure for a limited number of student-run competitive sports teams. We strive to operate safely while keeping the college’s educational mission at the forefront, within the limits of available resources.
Are there sports that ICRA does not sponsor?
ICRA does not sponsor:
- Sports that have a varsity program at The Citadel. Please refer to Citadel Athletics for a list of these sports.
- Hunting or fishing clubs. For information on these clubs, contact Cadet Activities.
- Motorsports.
- Marksmanship sports other than Pistol. See Citadel Athletics for Rifle.
- Sports for which the college does not have space or appropriate facilities to support.
- Sports where the goal is to strike an opponent’s head.
- Sports that aim to cause injury to an opponent. For information on combative instruction and training, consult the ROTC departments and affiliated clubs.
- Extreme sports without a college-wide review of risks.
What club sports does ICRA sponsor?
Although ICRA staff collaborate with team leadership to develop and implement a plan for a successful club sports season, ICRA does not organize or establish the club sports themselves. Instead, the program offers students the opportunity to create and lead their own teams. For more details on the organization and administration of the club sports program, see the Team Briefing. You can also visit our Directory for contact information related to club sports.
Does it cost anything to join an ICRA club sport?
Membership in an ICRA Club Sport is not included in tuition or fees, and these sports do not offer scholarships. Operational expenses are primarily focused on conference affiliation, liability insurance (if required), team equipment, home and away game fees (such as travel costs), and personal player gear. Most ICRA Club Sports require members to pay dues, and all involve some out-of-pocket expenses.
Do I have to try out?
Maybe. Membership requirements are specified in each club’s bylaws. Check with team leadership to see if you will have to try out.
Will I get to travel?
Maybe. Many ICRA Club Sports teams have the opportunity to compete on the road. However, cadet travel is limited due to commitments to the Corps of Cadets. Academic success is the top priority, and cadets often have other obligations within the corps. All cadet travel must be approved in advance. Team Captains are responsible for initiating the request, which should be submitted to the Commandant through the Director of Club Sports.
Will I have a coach?
Possible. A non-student advisor is required for all ICRA Club Sports. In addition, many teams have coaches and other volunteers working with them. Since these adults are volunteers, players are expected to participate actively in coaching and team management.
Are there rules I must follow?
Yes. Members must follow a code of conduct that includes acting with honor and respect, obeying laws, abstaining from tobacco, alcohol, and drugs during activities, and adhering to the rules governing sports and travel. Participants are also required to complete a Player Packet, which includes agreements regarding conduct, health insurance, and financial responsibilities, in order to be in good standing for participation.
I’m not a cadet. Can I join an ICRA Club Sport?
Maybe. You must be currently affiliated with The Citadel (student, faculty, or staff) to join an ICRA Club Sport. Membership requirements are specified in each club’s bylaws. Check with team contacts to see if you are eligible to play.
How do I join?
Contact a team captain. Complete a Player Packet and pay membership dues.
How do I start a new club sport?
Please read this overview of the organizational structure of ICRA Club Sports. We call it a Team Briefing. Then, contact the Director of Club Sports.
