Cadets pay a mandatory health fee for access to medical services at The Citadel Infirmary. Cadets are still required to have personal health insurance, which will be billed for medical services. Primary insurance can be updated using MUSC MyChart.
Cadet’s mandatory health fee only covers services provided at the Infirmary on campus. Any services provided off campus, whether MUSC or another entity, will be at the cost of the cadet, including medications delivered to the infirmary. The fee for a lab draw visit at the infirmary is covered; however, the testing of labs will be the cadet’s responsibility after insurance.
CGC graduate students, evening undergraduate students, and veteran students are not eligible to use the Infirmary at this time. Thus they must receive their medical care off-campus.
Because unexpected medical costs can adversely impact a student’s financial status, all students are strongly encouraged to carry supplemental health insurance.
International students are required to be covered by health insurance that meets federal and college standards. For more information, visit the CISP homepage.
TRICARE: Cadets covered under TRICARE who do not live in the Charleston area are asked to switch from TRICARE Prime to TRICARE Select (just the cadet, not the whole family). There is no cost to sign up for TRICARE Select, and this eliminates the need for the cadet to visit their Primary Care Manager (PCM) back home for authorization to see specialists when needed. Details are available from your home TRICARE Service Center or through: https://www.tricare.mil/Plans/PlanFinder. A military or benefits ID with a benefits number is required for billing services to Tricare.
MEDICAID: Cadets covered by MEDICAID are advised to check with their insurance carriers to determine if their plan provides health care and prescription coverage when away from home. Out-of-state Medicaid usually is not covered through MUSC.
STATEWIDE STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE: The Citadel is a member of the South Carolina Consortium of Colleges for Student Health Insurance. This program offers affordable student-health coverage for college students not covered under family or other insurance plans. Beginning in the fall of 2018, the plan is administered by Academic Health Plans through Blue Cross/Blue Shield and covers Citadel students for all activities while enrolled. This includes international students and student-athletes (intercollegiate sports, club sports, and intramural sports). Students are covered both on and off campus and while on field trips. The Citadel endorses the State plan but does not sell or administer the insurance policies. Citadel students can enroll at https://citadel.myahpcare.com.
Services and fees are reviewed annually.
