At The Citadel Leadership and Education Go Hand in Hand
The mission of The Citadel is to “educate and develop our students to become principled leaders in all walks of life” by instilling the core values of The Citadel in a disciplined and intellectually challenging environment.
“It describes our core values of duty, honor, and respect and positions them as the basis of a principled leader’s frame of reference. It identifies and defines seven characteristics that principled leaders manifest in all they do.”
Glenn M. Walters, President of The Citadel, on Leadership Development at The Citadel
The Citadel’s most recognizable leadership brand is a form of values-based leadership called principled leadership. Principled leadership puts the leader’s character into action, guiding thoughts, words, and deeds to produce outcomes consistent with the core values of the organization.
How The Citadel Builds Leadership
In accordance with The Citadel’s core values of honor, duty, and respect, leadership development focuses on seven key leadership characteristics including “Lead with Humility” and “Serve Others Before Self.”
These leadership principles represent a particularly empowering form of leadership that allows the freedom to develop creative and adaptive solutions that meet the demands of fluid and complex situations.

Curriculum That Prioritizes Leadership Across All Programs
At The Citadel, leadership is a key component of all curriculum and courses offered. All faculty are trained to foster a learning environment where leadership is at the forefront, regardless of a student’s area of study. This allows Citadel graduates to become leaders in all their future career endeavors and go on to become both influential and successful in their prospective industries.
To instill a fundamental importance of leadership, both undergraduate and graduate students are required to complete one introduction to leadership course in their first semester. This free course, LDRS 500 Principled Leader Seminar, provides a uniform basis of leadership education to all students at the very start of their educational career at The Citadel.
Krause Center for Leadership and Ethics
The Krause Center for Leadership and Ethics plays a key guiding role in leadership integration across all students. The Krause Center creates and advances leadership programs, ethics education and community engagement, to foster an environment to develop principled leaders.
The center hosts a series of events and activities open to The Citadel community. One annual event, Leadership Day, is hosted every October. On this day students can participate in additional or required leadership courses, or local community service. The Krause Center also hosts a Leadership Speaker Series, a continuous lineup of inspiring speakers who come to share their personal wisdom and experiences throughout the school year.
