What is the SC Read to Succeed Law?
The goal of the South Carolina Read to Succeed Act (R2S) is to ensure that every educator at every grade level in every school and subject area is committed and able to support reading development of the South Carolina students they serve. This legislation requires in-service teachers to take either one (R2S Literacy Requirement) or four (R2S Literacy Teacher Endorsement) additional classes focused on literacy, depending on your area of specialization (see below for specifics).
Why take Read to Succeed coursework at The Citadel?
- Reputation—The Citadel is the only Lowcountry institution to offer the M.Ed. in Literacy Education. Our literacy education programs are nationally recognized by the International Literacy Association.
- Flexibility—Courses are offered online in a sync/async format:
- Zoom weeks meet for 1.5 hours (5:30-7:00 pm)
- You network with peers, who are dedicated educators just like you. That’s why they’re working toward an advanced degree in language and literacy.
- You have direct access to your professors
- You participate in collaborative groups.
- You can see new instructional practices modelled and discuss them in real time.
- Asynchronous weeks mean you have an online module on Canvas. It’s not a PowerPoint some professor recycled from in-person teaching. It’s interactive, connected to your classrooms, and designed for you.
- Also, you can do your coursework in your jammies on the couch or during your planning period or whatever fits your schedule
- Professional Growth—The Citadel offers unparalleled professional networking opportunities.
- Degree and Certificate Options—All R2S coursework can be transferred to The Citadel’s M.Ed. in Literacy Education
What is the R2S Literacy Teacher Endorsement?
- Teaching Reading and Writing in a Balanced Literacy Classroom (EDUC 608)
- All certified Early Childhood, Elementary, ESOL, Special Education, and Montessori teachers must complete the R2S Literacy Teacher endorsement within 10 years or two renewal cycles.
- Required coursework offered by The Citadel: Foundations in Literacy (EDUC 588), Literacy Assessment (EDUC 591), Teaching Language and Literacy across the Content Areas (EDUC 592).
