Dr. Silvia Roca-Martinez

Dr. Roca-Martínez is an Associate Professor of Spanish. She holds a doctoral degree in Latin American Literature and Gender Studies. Her area of expertise is Cuba. Her research examines representations of Afro-Cuban religions in contemporary Cuban cultural production and the ways said representations articulate new expressions of Cubanness and Afro-Cubanness that dialogue with race, gender, and nation that belie the official narrative advanced by the Revolution. She is also interested and has published on life writing by women intellectuals in Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula.
She has directed and co-directed multiple study-abroad programs to Cuba, Perú, and Spain. She has also served as the Sigma Delta Pi and Spanish Club advisor and Spanish section coordinator. Currently, she serves as the co-director and co-editor of El Cid Journal. She teaches yoga on campus to faculty and staff.
