The original site of The Citadel was located in the heart of downtown Charleston in Marion Square. The site was a fortification established during the Revolutionary War, which later became a military academy in 1842. The City of Charleston offered the State 176 acres adjacent to Hampton Park for a new campus once enrollment outgrew the old one in 1918. Since then, The Citadel resides on the bank of the Ashley River, just over two miles from its original location. Learn more about The Citadel History.
The Citadel now sits on 300 acres with 27 buildings grouped around a 10-acre parade ground. The buildings are a Romanesque style of architecture with the use of arches and courtyards to replicate the old campus. There are four different program types, five different schools, NCAA Division I athletics, high impact practices and a variety of other opportunities. The South Carolina Corps of Cadets offers over 30 majors and over 40 minors, while The Citadel Graduate College offers 25 graduate degree programs, over 10 graduate certificate programs and 12 college transfer programs.
