Gen. Mark W. Clark’s Grave
The grave-site of Gen. Mark W. Clark, the 11th president of The Citadel, is located adjacent to the Thomas Dry Howie Memorial Carillon and Tower. Clark, a famous World War II Army commander, served as president from 1955 to 1964. During his tenure, The Citadel underwent a revitalization focusing on initiatives for the enhancement of academic and athletic programs, support for cultural activities to involve and attract faculty and cadets, and a mammoth construction program to complement academic activity. It was during Clark’s tenure that the current cadet Honor Code, the cornerstone of cadet life, was established. The Honor Code states that “a cadet does not lie, cheat, or steal, nor tolerate those who do.”
