Dr. Yochum is an applied physicist with interests in photonics, electronics, sensor systems, and nanotechnology. He is a firm believer in trying have fun while doing STEM. Some of his favorite teaching involves hands-on projects with students, especially designing, building, and testing sensor-based devices. If you are interested in pursuing physics at The Citadel, he would be happy to speak with you about our program and the success of our alumni.
Most recently, his research has focused on approaches to design novel sensor systems through a new approach to patterning nanostructured thin films. He is eager to include students in this interdisciplinary research so please reach out to him if you would like to collaborate on a project. Students would have the opportunity to develop skills in optics, lasers, automation, experimental design, data analysis, and more.
He co-authored a textbook, Instrumental Analysis, for Oxford University Press, with Rob Granger, Jill Granger, and Karl Sienerth. The text is a student-friendly approach to understanding the underlying theory, instrumental design, applications and operation of chemical instrumentation.
Prior to joining The Citadel in 2020, he was a Professor of Engineering and Physics, and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at Sweet Briar College. He led the Margaret Jones Wyllie’45 Engineering Program for more than ten years.
