The expectation for Citadel students is that all written work submitted for a grade is the person’s own work. That means that:
- You have not asked your roommate, another student who might major in English, or a student who always receives the grade of “A” on his/her papers to excessively proofread or edit your paper—this practice is considered to be plagiarism.
In addition,
- You are not asking your parents to excessively proofread or edit your paper as this is also considered plagiarism.
However,
- This does not mean that you cannot discuss a general approach to a particular topic with another person
Therefore, students who submit work that is not their own or that has been heavily edited and changed by someone else are subject to disciplinary action because they have plagiarized.
- However if you do choose to use the ideas of another person, you must provide a citation giving credit to that person.
Remember, asking others for help is a form of collaboration, so your professor must give permission for you to collaborate with others on an assignment.
