Notes from Engineering
In their final projects in Sylmarie Davila-Montero’s electrical laboratory class, students dove into the world of innovation. Each team chose a topic discussed in the lab and brought it to life with a real-world application. Their topics included voltage rectifiers, photodiodes, comparators, amplifiers, and DC motors.
In Gregory Mazzaro’s antennas and propagation class, seniors constructed their own antennas using everyday materials. Afterwards, they tested the functionality of the antennas using an antenna-mount rig assembled by Electrical and Computer Engineering lab tech Bart Knapp.
On December 1, Dávila-Montero and Mazzaro and a group of 11 electrical and computer engineering students visited Nucor Steel Berkley, a division of Nucor Corporation, one of the largest manufacturers of steel and steel products in North America. David Cole, a MSEE student and the cold mill electrical supervisor at Nucor, organized the event. After the tour, the group enjoyed lunch and a question-and-answer and networking session with Nucor management. Several students discussed internships and employment opportunities.
In December, Cadet Brandon Welch, a civil and environmental engineering major from Salem, South Carolina, was awarded the Institute of Transportation Engineering Gilbert Rowe Scholarship Award. The scholarship is named in honor of Gilbert Rowe who served as the District Six mechanical engineer for the South Carolina highway department for over 30 years and was instrumental in the success of computer control arterial traffic control systems in South Carolina.
Russ Cornette, CGC ’00, joined the Berkeley County Engineering Department in November as the county engineer. He previously worked as the town engineer and public works director of Summerville since 2005.
