Dean briefs new S.C. House committee
On January 10, Andrew Williams, Dean of the School of Engineering gave a brief to the new South Carolina House Committee on Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity and Cyber Crimes. Williams led the session with a user-friendly tutorial and exploration of AI, highlighting its transformative potential, especially in healthcare. He emphasized AI’s role in creating an AI-ready workforce and its benefits to society as well as the need for responsible AI practices.
Williams discussed The Citadel’s involvement in the National Science Foundation’s Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research project. The project, Artificial Intelligence-Enabled Devices for the Advancement of Personalized and Transformative Health Care in South Carolina, is being led by Clemson University with 10 other higher education institutions. The initiative focuses on leveraging AI for personalized healthcare innovations. Additionally, Williams talked about The Citadel’s new Center for AI, Algorithmic Integrity, and Autonomy Innovation.
The meeting included guest speakers from Microsoft and IBM who discussed the impact of AI on government and sustainable economic growth through responsible applications.
The new House Committee on AI underscores South Carolina’s commitment to creating legislation to integrate AI technologies for the greater good of its citizens, economy and security.
