Center for Mathematical Literacy recognized
The Center for Mathematical Literacy, an initiative sponsored by the Zucker School of Education and the STEM Center for Excellence, was a semi-finalist for the Dick and Tunky Riley WhatWorksSC Award for high impact educational programs in the state of South Carolina. Awards were marked by speeches from former U.S. Secretaries of Education Arne Duncan and Dick Riley.
The Center for Mathematical Literacy is run by Associate Professor and Program Coordinator Britnie Delinger Kane, who serves as interim dean for the Zucker School of Education; Richard Robinson, Ph.D.; Director of the STEM Center of Excellence and Associate Professor Jennifer Albert, and Assistant Director of the STEM Center Melanie Blanton. The program provides two years of ongoing professional development for rural middle school mathematics teachers on how to help students develop literacy skills in algebra. The Center for Mathematical Literacy is funded by a generous grant from the Commission on Higher Education.
