Swain Family School of Science and Mathematics brings home competition wins
Three teams of physics and cyber and computer science students competed against Virginia Military Institute in the U.S. Army STAR Challenge, a design competition to solve extant problems facing today’s soldiers. The Citadel came home with the trophy and first-and-second-place wins.
The winning team included physics and cyber and computer science students Ricardo Quintero, Adam Shingler, Matthew DeCarlo, Jonah Dalton, Jonah Charles and Vincent Massaro. They were led by Assistant Professor Kaelyn Leake and Professor of Computer Science Deepti Joshi.
Cadets from the Department of Cyber and Computer Sciences recently placed second in the Palmetto Cyber Defense Competition and first in Hack Warz, a capture-the-flag style hacking competition.
The Palmetto Cyber Defense Competition was held on April 13 – 15. PCDC is an event that helps promote cyber security education and awareness. Hack Warz was part of PCDC, where the cadets leveraged tools available to them to find and exploit vulnerabilities in different operating systems.
This victory was secured through relentless hard work, which included extra homework, practices and overall organization.
The students involved in PCDC were Cadets Dylan Acosta, Kirin Chaplin, Slateon Frederick, Dalton Hazelwood, Noah Klepper, Joshua McKinley and Tobias Wood. The cadets who participated in the Hack Warz competition were Acosta, Frederick, Hazelwood, Klepper, McKinley and Wood.
