Mathematics research
Several students majoring in mathematics, including Manning Hitt, Garner Page, Stratton Knuth, Wei Shan Lu, Aiden Raab and Matthew Varney, solved four open problems from journals as part of their introductory MATH 121 in the fall of 2023. In addition, Lu solved a separate problem under the guidance of Professor Rigoberto Florez in the spring of 2024. They received recognition for their work from Math Horizons and Math Magazine.
Building on this success, Hitt received a SURE grant to pursue research for a project entitled “Exploratory Analysis of the Top Athletes’ Performances in ATP Tour” under the guidance of Associate Professor Bo Li and Assistant Professor Chao Gu. In this project they used data analytics to analyze the performance of tennis players. Hitt recently completed this project and will present his results at the Mathematical Association of America Southeast Section annual meeting at High Point University in February 2025.
