Math majors tackle difficult problems
Last semester Cadets Ernest James and William Boyd received recognition by Math Magazine for solving a problem posted by the magazine on good and bad sequences. The two math majors presented their findings at the Carolina Math Seminar hosted by Coastal Carolina University. “The conference really gave me a feel for how math gets done,” said Boyd, a junior from New Hampshire. “It gave me an idea of how to prove things when the answer is not in a book.”
James and Boyd solved this problem under the guidance of Associate Professor of Mathematics and Interim Department Head Antara Mukherjee.
