The Citadel’s first female MBA graduate

After reading an article about The Citadel’s celebration of 25 years of female cadet graduates, Brian Tucker, Ph.D., MBA and degree transfer program advisor, was inspired to learn about the first woman to earn an MBA at The Citadel. With a little help from archivist Tessa Updike, Tucker learned that Capt. Dorothy “Dottie” Nazarenus, USN, Ret., a native of Denver, Colorado, holds the distinction.

Nazarenus was born in 1938. She earned her bachelor’s degree in music from the University of Denver. Following her undergraduate studies, she attended the U.S. Naval Women’s Officer School and became a Naval officer. “This career decision afforded her service opportunities and travel to Hawaii, Japan and the Philippines,” said Tucker. “Her persuasive spirit led to leadership opportunities in service, and she even attempted to recruit other female students.”

In the 1970s, Nazarenus continued her studies at The Citadel, earning her MBA in 1975. In 2023, Nazarenus, who dedicated her life to service and adventure, passed away at the age of 85.

“Even though she is gone, Capt. Nazarenus represents how diverse and ground-breaking our graduate population is and continues to be,” said Tucker. “She represents The Citadel’s core values—honor, duty and respect—tenfold.”
